Colourful kites flying over Għarb during the Gozo International Kite Festival 2026

The skies above Għarb, Gozo, came alive with colour during the International Kite and Wind Festival 2026, bringing families, children and kite enthusiasts together for a wonderful celebration of outdoor fun, creativity and community.

Held from 16 to 18 October in the beautiful San Dimitri area, this year’s festival once again showed why Gozo is such a special destination for family experiences.

For Kids In Malta®, events like these are about much more than entertainment. They are about creating memories, discovering new places and giving children opportunities to experience the simple joys of being outdoors.

A Sky Full of Colour in Għarb, Gozo

Imagine standing in the open countryside of Gozo, surrounded by families looking towards the sky as colourful kites dance above them.

From enormous animal-shaped creations to smaller traditional kites, the festival transformed the Gozitan landscape into a wonderful display of movement, imagination and colour.

International kite flyers brought their creativity and skills to the event, demonstrating how something as simple as a kite can capture the attention of both children and adults.

Although the wind was not always as strong as everyone might have hoped, the festival still offered families an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time together.

Sometimes, the most memorable family moments are not about perfect conditions. They are about simply being there, sharing an experience and enjoying the moment.

More Than Just Flying Kites

The International Kite and Wind Festival offered much more than impressive displays in the sky.

Throughout the weekend, visitors could explore a variety of family-friendly attractions, including:

  • Kite-flying demonstrations by international participants
  • Creative kite-making workshops
  • Games and activities for children
  • Face painting, balloon modelling and character appearances
  • Local artisan stalls and kite sales
  • Food, music and evening entertainment
  • Illuminated kite displays and the traditional bonfire finale

One of the special additions to the 2026 programme was the introduction of illuminated kite shows, bringing a different atmosphere to the festival after sunset.

Organised by Għarb Local Council, the event welcomed visitors of different ages and backgrounds, making it a celebration for the wider community.

Why Events Like This Matter for Children

At Kids In Malta®, we strongly believe in the importance of encouraging children to spend time outdoors, explore nature and discover activities beyond screens.

A kite festival might appear to be a simple family outing, but it offers children so much more.

Watching kites move through the air can spark curiosity about wind, weather, movement and science. Flying a kite encourages patience, coordination, problem-solving and perseverance.

Most importantly, outdoor events create opportunities for families to connect.

Children do not always need expensive attractions or complicated entertainment to have fun. Sometimes, an open field, a colourful kite and the company of family and friends are enough.

Bringing Communities Together Through Simple Experiences

One of the most beautiful aspects of family events in Malta and Gozo is seeing people from different backgrounds enjoying the same experience.

Malta is home to families from many nationalities and cultures, and events like the Gozo Kite Festival provide welcoming spaces where people can come together.

Watching children enjoy the open air, looking up at the colourful kites and sharing those moments with their families is a reminder of why community events are so valuable.

For Kids In Malta®, these are the experiences worth celebrating and sharing.

They encourage children to be curious, active and connected to the world around them.

A Special Thank You to the Organisers

A heartfelt thank you to Għarb Local Council, the organisers, international kite flyers, volunteers and everyone involved in bringing the International Kite & Wind Festival 2026 to life.
