Every year on 21st September, people all over the world celebrate the International Day of Peace (Peace Day). It’s a day dedicated to reminding us that peace is possible in our homes, in our schools, and in our communities. The United Nations established this day to encourage non-violence, kindness, and unity among people everywhere.

For children, Peace Day is more than a symbol. It’s an opportunity to learn that peace begins with small actions. Sharing a toy, solving problems with words, showing kindness to a friend, or helping at home. Celebrating Peace Day as a family teaches children that they can play a role in creating a more caring and respectful world.

At Kids in Malta, we’ve put together a simple day plan of activities that families can do together at home to celebrate Peace Day in a meaningful way.

Morning: Start the Day with Peace

  • Family Chat: Over breakfast, ask your children: “What does peace mean to you?” Write their answers on a big sheet of paper.
  • Peace Pledge: Create a family promise like “We will listen, share, and be kind.” Sign it and stick it on the fridge.

Midday: Creative Peace Fun

  • Peace Art: Ask your child to draw or paint “What peace looks like.” Display the artwork proudly.
  • Kindness Jar: Write small acts of kindness on slips of paper (e.g., “Say thank you,” “Help a friend”). Pick one to do together today.

Afternoon: Quiet Reflection

  • Peace Moment: Sit together for two minutes in silence. Breathe deeply and think of people or places you wish peace for.
  • Peace Walk: Take a family walk outside. Smile at neighbors, enjoy nature, and practice calmness together.

Evening: Stories & Sharing

  • Read Together: Choose a book about kindness, friendship, or peace. After reading, talk about what the characters did to show peace.
  • End-of-Day Sharing: Before bedtime, ask: “What peaceful thing did we do today?” Celebrate every effort, no matter how small.

Why Celebrate Peace Day at Home?
Because children learn most from the examples they see every day. By dedicating time to Peace Day, you show your children that peace isn’t just a word. It’s a way of living. These simple family activities plant seeds of kindness, respect, and care that will grow for years to come.

Do you celebrate Peace Day at home? Share your family’s ideas. We’d love to hear them!
