From international champions to young swimmers taking on their own challenges, OCEANMAN Malta 2026 transformed Għadira Bay into a celebration of determination, sporting achievement and community. With athletes from across the world, families cheering from the shore and children experiencing the excitement of international competition, Malta witnessed something truly special.
On 2 and 3 October 2026, the beautiful waters of Għadira Bay in Mellieħa welcomed OCEANMAN Malta, part of the international open-water swimming series.
With 560 swimmers registered from 43 countries ahead of the event, Malta became a meeting point for athletes representing different nationalities, generations and levels of experience.
For Kids In Malta®, being there from Friday through Saturday’s final events was an incredible opportunity to experience the competition firsthand, meet athletes and witness the atmosphere surrounding this international sporting occasion.
But what made OCEANMAN particularly memorable was not simply the racing.
It was seeing how sport could bring children, adults, families and international athletes together in one place.
A World of Athletes Meets in Malta
There was something remarkable about seeing swimmers from different parts of the world gather at one of Malta’s most beautiful bays.
Athletes arrived with different backgrounds, experiences and ambitions, but they shared one thing: a passion for swimming.
Some came to challenge themselves over the demanding 10 km distance. Others competed over 5 km or 2 km, while younger swimmers had their own opportunity to participate through OCEANKIDS.
The programme included five race formats:
- OCEANMAN 10 km: The main long-distance endurance race.
- HALF OCEANMAN 5 km: A challenging event for experienced swimmers.
- SPRINT 2 km: A shorter open-water competition.
- OCEANKIDS 500 m: A dedicated event for young swimmers.
- OCEANTEAMS 3 × 500 m: A relay encouraging teamwork and shared achievement.
Each distance brought its own challenges, excitement and achievements.
Together, they created an event where swimming was celebrated across different ages and abilities.
Young Swimmers Sharing the Stage with Experienced Athletes
One of the most inspiring aspects of OCEANMAN Malta was seeing young swimmers become part of the same international sporting occasion as experienced adult competitors.
The OCEANKIDS race gave children their own opportunity to compete, challenge themselves and experience the excitement of an international event.
For a young swimmer, standing at the starting line can be a significant moment.
There may be excitement, nervousness, anticipation and determination.
And behind that young athlete are often parents, coaches and family members who have supported countless training sessions and competitions.
At OCEANMAN Malta, the next generation of swimmers was not simply watching from the sidelines. They were part of the event.
What made the occasion particularly meaningful was the connection between generations.
Young swimmers could see what experienced athletes were capable of achieving, while adults could celebrate the determination and enthusiasm of the children taking part.
Different distances, different ages, different goals, but the same passion for the water.
Celebrating the Winners and Every Athlete Who Took Part
OCEANMAN Malta 2026 brought impressive performances across its different race categories.
Among the notable achievements was German swimmer Oliver Kusch, who completed the 5 km HALF OCEANMAN in 1:11:08, securing second place in the overall men’s classification and first place in his age category.
His performance was particularly remarkable because only an 18-year-old swimmer finished ahead of him in the men’s overall 5 km standings.
Another German competitor, Carsten Bünger, completed the demanding 10 km race in 3:06:02, earning third place in his age category.
Young Spanish swimmer Noa Cámara also delivered an outstanding performance in the 500 m OCEANKIDS event. She finished in 7:35, winning her category and qualifying for the OCEANMAN World Final in the Dominican Republic.
Her father, Fernando Cámara, competed in the 5 km event, finishing in 1:28:27 and also qualifying for the World Final.
Their achievements illustrate something especially meaningful about OCEANMAN: sport can be a shared family journey, with parents and children pursuing their own goals at the same international event.
Every podium finish deserves recognition, but so does the determination of the swimmers who challenged themselves, completed their chosen distances and celebrated personal achievements.
For some, success meant standing on the podium.
For others, it meant completing a distance they had trained for over many months.
Both deserve to be celebrated.
Families: The Heart of OCEANMAN Malta
While the swimmers were at the centre of the competition, the families and supporters along the shoreline were an important part of the atmosphere.
Sporting events like OCEANMAN are not only about the people in the water.
They are also about the people who stand behind them.
Parents encouraging their children, families following the competition, friends supporting one another and coaches guiding their athletes all contribute to the experience.
Għadira Bay provided a beautiful setting where spectators could follow much of the racing from the shore.
For families, this created an opportunity to experience international sport together.
Children could watch experienced swimmers compete, discover what endurance swimming involves and perhaps imagine themselves taking part in a future edition.
And for parents, watching their children participate in an event of this scale can be a moment of enormous pride.
The medals may belong to individual athletes, but the memories are often shared by entire families.
Malta’s Sporting Talent on an International Stage
OCEANMAN Malta also offered an important opportunity for local athletes to compete alongside international swimmers.
Among the Maltese endurance athletes involved in the 10 km competition were Nicky Farrugia and ultra-endurance athlete Fabio Spiteri.
Maltese Olympian Sasha Gatt was also among the competitors in the 5 km event.
Their participation highlighted the depth of sporting experience represented at OCEANMAN Malta.
For younger swimmers, having opportunities to compete at home in an international event is particularly valuable.
It brings high-level competition closer to the local sporting community and allows young athletes to see experienced competitors in action.
At Kids In Malta®, we believe these moments deserve greater visibility.
Malta has young athletes who dedicate considerable time to training, balancing their education, sporting commitments and personal lives.
Their achievements deserve recognition, and their stories deserve to be told.
Beyond the Results: What I Experienced at OCEANMAN Malta
Being present from Friday through Saturday gave me the opportunity to experience the event beyond a single race.
I had the pleasure of meeting some of the athletes and learning more about the people behind the competition.
As someone passionate about sport, I found it fascinating to see the different generations and nationalities coming together through swimming.
What stayed with me was the dedication surrounding the event.
Behind every athlete is a journey that spectators may never fully see: the training, preparation, challenges, sacrifices and determination required to reach the starting line.
And behind many young swimmers are families who make those sporting opportunities possible.
This is exactly why I want Kids In Malta® to continue giving greater attention to sport.
Not only to report results, but to introduce families to athletes, celebrate young talent and highlight the communities that make sporting achievements possible.
The Importance of Sportsmanship
OCEANMAN Malta also reminded us that competitive sport comes with responsibility.
Following an incident during the 10 km race involving physical contact between competitors, Kids In Malta® shared information communicated by the Race Director concerning a subsequent disqualification.
The situation highlighted an important principle: competition must always be accompanied by respect for fellow athletes and the rules of the sport.
For young swimmers, sporting events offer lessons that extend far beyond physical performance.
They teach perseverance, resilience, discipline and respect.
Winning is an achievement, but fairness and sportsmanship are equally important parts of being an athlete.
Bringing International Sport to the Maltese Islands
OCEANMAN Malta was also an important occasion for the local sporting community.
The event was organised locally by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA), with VisitMalta as its main sponsor and support from event partners including Vecchia Napoli Mellieħa and ProteinMalta.
Bringing an international swimming series to Malta created opportunities for local athletes while showcasing the islands as a destination for sporting events.
With participants travelling from across Europe and beyond, OCEANMAN demonstrated how sport can connect people from different cultures and backgrounds.
International events also introduce visiting athletes and their families to Malta’s natural environment, hospitality and communities.
And for the local population, they provide opportunities to experience international sporting competition close to home.
More Than a Race: An Inspiration for the Next Generation
For Kids In Malta®, OCEANMAN 2026 represented something particularly important.
It showed how sport can connect generations.
Children had the opportunity to participate in their own competition while sharing the wider event with experienced athletes.
Families came together to support their swimmers.
International competitors brought different experiences and sporting journeys to Malta.
And local athletes had an opportunity to represent their sporting community on an international stage.
These are the experiences that can inspire a child to take up swimming, join a sports club or discover a new passion.
Not every young swimmer will become an Olympian or international champion.
But every child deserves opportunities to explore their potential, challenge themselves and experience the positive impact of sport.
