Discover the Book Fair: Where Every Child Can Find Their Next Favourite Story

At the heart of the festival is a wonderful gathering of more than 40 exhibitors, bringing together publishers, booksellers, authors, illustrators, educational organisations and cultural institutions.

Visitors can browse thousands of books, from colourful picture books and early readers to adventure stories, young adult novels, educational resources, international bestsellers and Maltese literature.

Among the participating exhibitors are established booksellers and publishers such as Agenda Bookshop, alongside independent publishers and specialist literary organisations.

For families raising children in Malta, this is also an opportunity to discover books in different languages and learn more about Maltese storytelling and culture.

Why Should Parents Visit a Book Fair With Their Children?

A book fair is much more than a place to purchase books.

It gives children the freedom to explore, discover their interests and experience the excitement of choosing something for themselves.

A child who struggles to enjoy reading in the classroom might discover a graphic novel, an animal adventure, a sports biography or a beautifully illustrated story that suddenly captures their imagination.

And that moment matters.

Reading supports vocabulary, language development, imagination, comprehension and critical thinking. Sharing books also creates opportunities for conversation and connection between parents and children.

Five simple ways to make the most of your family visit:

  1. Let your child explore different genres without immediately directing their choices.
  2. Encourage them to choose at least one book independently.
  3. Discover a Maltese-language book together, even if Maltese is not your family’s first language.
  4. Talk about the illustrations, characters and stories that catch their attention.
  5. Make reading part of the experience after you return home.

For multilingual and international families, the festival is also a welcoming opportunity to explore Malta’s literary heritage while celebrating the languages spoken at home.

A love of reading often begins with a single book that feels just right.

€20 Book Vouchers for Students — What Parents Need to Know

One of the most valuable opportunities at this year’s festival is the €20 book voucher available to eligible primary and secondary school students.

The voucher can be redeemed at participating booksellers during the festival.

How Does It Work?

For students visiting with their school: Schools organise visits in advance, and participating students receive their vouchers at the festival.

For students visiting with parents or guardians: Families can register through the official online voucher portal.

For students who miss their school visit: The National Book Council advises that they may collect their voucher from the festival information point when visiting independently.

For parents, this is a wonderful opportunity to give children ownership over their reading choices while encouraging them to explore new authors and subjects.

Children’s Theatre: Stories Come Alive on Stage

Why the Malta Book Festival Matters for Families

In a world where children are surrounded by screens and constant digital entertainment, opportunities to experience books, stories and creativity together are increasingly valuable.

A book festival allows children to see reading as something social, exciting and alive.

They can meet authors, experience stories on stage, discover illustrations, ask questions, explore unfamiliar subjects and choose books that reflect their interests.

For schools and educators, it offers opportunities to connect classroom learning with real cultural experiences.

For international families, it provides another way to discover Malta’s language, literature and creative identity.

And for parents, it can be a reminder that some of the most meaningful family moments begin with something simple: choosing a book and sharing a story.

A Little Reading Challenge for Families

Why not turn your festival visit into a family adventure?

Encourage each child to choose a book, discover a new author, explore a different genre or learn something about Maltese literature.

After your visit, ask your children what surprised them, which story they enjoyed most and what they would like to read next.

These small conversations can help turn a festival visit into a lasting memory.
